Pines of Sarasota Honors Volunteers

volunteers_thumbSarasota, Florida – April 12, 2011 – Volunteers of all ages gathered Tuesday to be honored for their invaluable services and contributions in 2010 at Pines of Sarasota. Active in almost all of Pines’ departments, particularly in resident activities and the Fabulous Finds thrift stores, the group put in an astonishing total of over 18,200 hours this past year.

Each attendee received a Pines Volunteer lapel pin upon entering the resplendently decorated Cullers Hall. Flowers graced the tables as guests mingled and dined, accompanied by live jazz piano tunes from noted pianist Steve McCoy.

When asked about her work with the residents, Ruth Douglas, a new volunteer since March 2011, explained: “I love volunteering and visiting with the residents, one on one. They think I am giving them so much. But they are giving me even more.”

Another attendee, Kat Chadwick, explained the importance of volunteering for her: “My Mom is in a nursing home out of state. I can’t be with her, but I surely can help here at the Pines. By helping someone here, I’m hoping that someone is helping her there.” Kat has volunteered at Fabulous Finds since January 2010.

John Overton, CEO of Pines, thanked the volunteers and emphasized their contribution to making residents feel comfortable and loved. “As a not-for-profit organization, we depend on dedicated and caring people like you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. We wouldn’t be able to do it without you.”

Susan Wenzel, Director of Volunteer Services at Pines, says the organization relies on the support of its strong volunteer arm. “They enrich our lives by sharing their experiences, talents and knowledge with both our residents and our staff. In every way, they’re an integral part of Pines’ family. Our gratitude cannot be articulated enough.”
